News Release

2 May 2024

Leicester participants in the world’s largest trial of a new blood test, which can detect cancer  often before symptoms appear, are being invited to return for a final blood test, two years on  from the start of the trial.

People who signed up for the first stage of the national NHS-Galleri trial will receive a letter  from the NHS inviting them to book their appointment for when the mobile clinics return to  Leicester in May and June.

The main mobile testing unit will be based outside Hamilton Tesco from 17 May, with smaller  mobile units visiting other Leicester City locations, including Leicester Central Mosque and  East Leicester Medical Practice.

Dr Pawan Randev, GP Clinical Lead for Cancer for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland  Integrated Care Board (LLR ICB), said: “Thank you to everyone in Leicester who joined this  ground-breaking research back in 2022. Please look out for your letter inviting you back to  give your next blood sample.”

“By taking part in this trial, you are at the forefront of developing a test that has the potential to  save lives from cancer in the UK and around the world. You could be helping us to  revolutionise cancer diagnosis and care.”

The Galleri™ test is a simple blood test that is particularly effective at finding cancers that are  difficult to identify early – such as head and neck, bowel, lung, pancreatic, and throat cancers. The NHS-Galleri trial, the first of its kind, will assess how well the test works in the NHS and  whether the technology can be used as a tool to screen people with no cancer symptoms.

The trial recruited 140,000 participants nationally, including those who signed up in Leicester.  Anyone whose results indicate a possible cancer will be followed up urgently in the NHS.

The NHS-Galleri trial is being run by Cancer Research UK and King’s College London Cancer  Prevention Trials Unit in partnership with the NHS and healthcare company, GRAIL, which  has developed the Galleri test.
