If you are a man turning 65, you may soon receive an invitation in the post for an abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, also known as AAA screening. This is a free NHS health check that plays an important role in preventing serious illness and saving lives.
An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a swelling of the aorta, the main blood vessel that runs from the heart through the abdomen. In many cases, an AAA causes no symptoms at all. People often feel completely well and are unaware there is a problem. If an aneurysm grows and ruptures, it can be life threatening. This is why screening is so important.
The AAA screening is quick and straightforward. The appointment usually takes around 10 minutes. A trained healthcare professional uses a handheld ultrasound scanner, which is gently moved over the surface of the abdomen. The scan is simple, painless, and most people find it comfortable. You will be given your result straight away.
Men are offered AAA screening at the age of 65 because the condition is more common in this group. If you are registered with a GP, you should automatically receive an invitation when you turn 65. If you are over 65 and have never been screened, you can still book an appointment.
Attending your screening gives you peace of mind. If no swelling is found, no further action is needed. If a small aneurysm is detected, it can be monitored safely over time. Early detection allows doctors to manage the condition before it becomes dangerous.
If you are turning 65, look out for your invitation arriving in the post. If you are over 65 and have not yet been screened, you are encouraged to get in touch and book an appointment.
