Digital health technologies are becoming an increasingly important component of long term condition management. Asthma care is one area where digital tools have the potential to improve patient engagement and self management.

A range of approved digital technologies are now available to support medication reminders, symptom monitoring, peak flow tracking and personalised asthma action plans. Some tools can also help patients recognise early warning signs of deterioration and encourage timely intervention.

The benefits of digital support are particularly relevant in asthma, where poor adherence to preventative medication remains a significant contributor to exacerbations and avoidable healthcare utilisation.

Technology is not a replacement for clinical care. Instead, it provides an additional layer of support between consultations. For many patients, digital reminders and tracking tools can reinforce self management behaviours and improve confidence in managing their condition.

As digital health technologies continue to develop, primary care will play an important role in helping patients identify safe, evidence based tools that complement their clinical management plans.
